CMCCN Interhospital Transfers Guidelines
The Cheshire and Mersey Adult Critical Care Network provides guidance for safely transferring patients from critical care units (CCUs) directly to ward-level care in another hospital.
Overview
Standard practice is to transfer patients between critical care units before stepping down to a ward. However, in some circumstances, it may be appropriate to transfer a patient directly from a CCU to a ward in another hospital—provided the patient is stable and suitable for ward-level care.
Key Safety Message
Step‑down interhospital transfers should only take place when patients are demonstrably stable and when both organisations are confident the receiving ward can safely meet the patient’s needs.
